Visualization of Chimp and Human DNA

We know that humans and chimps are 96 percent genetically the same. This simulation visualizes the similarity and dissimilarity of DNA sequences. (I highly recommend to watch it in high quality, it is a little bit easier to see the comparison of DNA sequences.)

BBC - The Story of God (3 of 3) The God of the Gaps

The last episode is focusing on the struggle between science and religion.

Galileo Galilei discovered that his observations contradicted the Bible and in the middle of 19 century Darwin pushed back the God with his theory of evolution.

Robert Winston meets Richard Dawkins and Dean Hamer who claimed that he found God gene (VMAT2).

Then he visits a creationist museum and debates the creationist Ken Ham in a radio show (I think the most interesting part of the episode).

The episode ends at the CERN laboratory.

BBC - The Story of God (1 of 3) Life, the Universe and Everything

Three-part video series presented by the physician Professor Robert Winston explores the nature of our believes, the understanding of God in different times and different cultures, what it means to be a human.

He begins his search in the depths of the caverns in south-west France. The mysterious hand prints on the cave walls establish a connection between the supernatural powers inside the rocks.

Then he visits Teotihuacan, one of the largest ancient cities in the world. In the great temple human sacrifice practiced by the Aztec priests once upon a time.

He meets a Buddhist priest to understand Buddhism its teachings are similar atheism.

The last stop in this episode is Iran, the birth place of Zoroastrianism that is possibly the source of monotheistic religions.

I urge you for the sake of the young and the old, to contact your US Congressman and Senators to urge them to vote "NO" on this legislation. We need healthcare reform, but not like this!!!

Darwin Loves You: Natural Selection and the Re-enchantment of the World - George Levine

"Levine again and again shows how evolutionary science can allow one to view the world with awe and reverence." Robert Pennock, American Scientist

Although the bumper-sticker title seems glib, Levine's book is most assuredly not. It will be a difficult read for nonphilosophers, even though Levine, professor emeritus of English at Rutgers, raises noteworthy points. His main premise is that a close reading of Darwin disproves Max Weber's contention that a "rational scientific" outlook "expels meaning and value from the world." Levine argues persuasively that an understanding of Darwinism can lead to a secular enchantment of the sort experienced by Darwin himself as he worked to make sense of the world around him: "an attitude of awe and love toward the multiple forms of life" in all their extraordinary diversity. Enchantment of this type, Levine explains, is no less important or meaningful than enchantment arising from religion. Levine also offers a textual analysis of Darwin to demonstrate that much writing that claims to derive from Darwin, especially within the realm of politics, does not necessarily follow from his original intent. With polemicists from all portions of the political spectrum attempting to use Darwin to their own advantage, Levine offers a fair warning to readers to be wary of the political extrapolation, because scientific theories themselves have no political content. BBC - Noah's Ark: The Real Story

"A great flood would leave a signature. It would be a very very large signature apparent all over the world. There is no such signature. There's no evidence, in fact there is only overwhelming evidence to the contrary." Ian Plimer, Geologist

According to the Bible, a global flood occurred about 5000 years ago and after the catastrophe, Noah and his family landed in the Mountains of Ararat. Geologically --and logically--, is it possible to believe such a story?

Archaeological datas show that the deluge is a different version of Sumerian epic of Gilgamesh and the king in the story who survived the flood was turned into Noah by the Jewish priests.

This is the true story of a famous epic found in the Bible, the Koran and the Torah.

Shepherds R Us

HOMILY16th Sunday in Ordinary TimeReadings: Jer 23:1-6; Ps 23:1-3, 3-4, 5, 6; Eph 2:13-18; Mk 6:30-34The readings this Sunday are replete with references to shepherds. Anglican Schism Now Official - Orthodox Episcopalians Seek Refuge - Convert To Catholicism

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: We've seen it coming for a long time. Ever since the election of Bishop Gene Robinson back in 2003, the demise of the US Episcopal Church (ECUSA) was inevitable. Now after multiple warnings from Anglican provinces around the world, as well as a stern warning from the Lambeth Council not to continue gay ordinations, the US Episcopal Church has openly defied the consensus of the worldwide Anglican Communion by voting for more gay ordinations as well as blessing gay "marriages." The US Episcopal Church has effectively thrown itself out of what remains of the former Anglican Communion. As of right now, thanks to the actions of the ECUSA's governing body, there is no officially recognized Anglican province in the United States.

A small group of Episcopalians have been working to create an orthodox alternative to the US Episcopal Church, and in time they may be recognized by the Archbishop of Canterbury. However a growing number of orthodox Episcopalians are beginning to realize that no matter what final resolution occurs, the Anglican Communion has now been wounded beyond repair. The end of an era has come.
(CNA) - Prominent biblical scholar and Anglican Bishop N.T. Wright has said the Episcopal Church’s recent decision to allow homosexuals to be ordained as bishops will mark a “clear break” with the Anglican Communion and formalizes a “schism.” He also insisted that chastity is not “optional” for Christians.

On Tuesday the General Convention of the Episcopal Church (TEC) voted by wide margins to pass a resolution allowing homosexuals to enter “any ordained ministry” in the church...

A growing number of Episcopalians are beginning to understand that the only way Anglo-Catholicism can be fully realized in this post-modern world is within the communion of the universal Catholic Church and under the protection of the Bishop of Rome.
(Virtue on Line) - New Liturgical Movement is reporting that the Anglican All Saints Sisters of the Poor in Catonsville, Maryland have announced their intention to be received into the Catholic Church on September 3. These are wonderful women and this is wonderful news.

As an Anglican, I made two retreats with the sisters when the men's order I was an associate of held it's chapter at Catonsville and I've visited one or two other times. One of their sisters was assigned to St. Anna's, the small house they maintain in Philadelphia, and I knew her quite well from my days at S. Clement's.

The sisters have been in discernment about their future and the rumor mill has been churning for some time, so this is not unexpected, but it is very good to hear. Their resident chaplain, Rev. Canon Warren Tanghe, announced his submission some time ago. Their previous chaplain was also received four or five years ago. They've been in my prayers and those of many others.....

It's not just clergy and religious who are making the switch, but individual laymen and entire congregations too. Some of them are making a clean break with Anglicanism and starting over as Roman Catholics. When the new English translation of the liturgy is released between 2010 and 2012, the ordinary form of the Catholic mass will become strikingly similar to the traditional form of the old Anglican liturgy. So transition from Anglican to Catholic will be significantly smoother in the years ahead.

However, a growing number of Anglicans converting to Catholicism are bringing their English customs with them, and believe it or not, Rome has already made provision for this.

It's called the Anglican Use Pastoral Provision. While not a full rite within the Roman Catholic Church, it does maintain many similar characteristics, which allows US Episcopalians to essentially do everything the same way they have always done it, except now they are under the pastoral protection of the pope. They are free from liberal influences, openly homosexual clergy, gay marriages, and even women priests. Those Anglican Use Catholic churches already established essentially run themselves the same way the Episcopal Church used to do things fifty years ago, before the radical changes and the overwhelming influence of modernism.

The Anglican Use Society was formed to help Episcopalians integrate their Anglican customs into the Catholic Church under the Anglican Use Pastoral Provision. By contacting the Anglican Use Society, Episcopalians seeking pastoral protection can be directed to an Anglican Use parish, or to an Anglican Use community that is in the process of starting a parish. Furthermore, if a group contacting the society is large enough, the Society can give instructions for the process of starting their own Anglican Use community and parish.

ALERT! - Freedom Of Religion Dies In The United States Of America

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: Yesterday, July 17, 2009 marked the end of religious freedom in America. The Senate has just passed Amendment 1539 to the Defense Appropiration Bill, also known as the "Hate Crimes Bill," and the "Pedophile Protection Act." The bill essentially makes it possible to prosecute priests, pastors, rabbis and clerics for a "hate crime" if it is claimed that anything they preach from behind the pulpit might have in some way caused anyone who heard it to commit a "hate crime." Even the bill's sponsors admit there is no protection for religious speech in this legislation. The House recently passed a similar version of the bill, and once the two are reconciled, it is sure to be signed into law by alleged President Barack Obama in the very near future.

Opponents of the bill point out that this will effectively have a chilling effect on religious speech in America, causing most clergy to skip over portions of the Bible condemning homosexuality, and avoiding any sermons related to a similar topic. Most clergy would just consider the risk too great. Those clergy who continue to exercise their religious duties to preach against these sins will be subject to criminal prosecution and at the mercy of the local district attorney. The bill also elevates pedophiles to a "protected class" on par with homosexuals.

Similar laws in Canada and Europe have proved disastrous to free religious expression, resulting in the criminal prosecution of some clergy and the silencing of others. Now that the law has come to America, we can expect similar results.

Some might point out that this law is unconstitutional. To which they would be right. However, determining that is not as simple as it seems. The bill claims to protect the constitutional rights of homosexuals and other sexual deviants. So the courts will be forced into a balancing act, trying to uphold the religious rights of Christians, Jews and Muslims, while simultaneously trying to uphold the rights the law claims to protect. It's a balancing act that the federal courts will surly disagree on, and one the Supreme Court of the United States might have difficulty sorting out. In the mean time, criminal prosecutions of clergy will go forward, and the gag effect on everyone else will slowly go into effect. As a result, even this blog 'The Catholic Knight' may be shut down, for no other reason than upholding Catholic teaching on human sexuality.

The Democrats have sought this "holy grail" of civil rights legislation for decades. Now they have it. With it they can finally silence the churches, synagogues and mosques from stopping their gay constituents from promoting homosexuality among our children.

Catholic Men Should Be Knights Not Masons

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: The Knights of Columbus, of which I am a 4th degree member, is a fraternal Catholic order with a membership of some 1.7 million men. It is designed primarily to serve the Catholic Church, and secondarily the men who are members, by providing a means and conduit through which they may help each other, their families, the Church and third-party charities. The Knights of Columbus also provides life insurance policies to it's members and uses the proceeds to benefit the Catholic Church in various ways.

The Knights of Columbus was founded by The Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut on August 2, 1881. His primary motivation was to organize a mutual benefit society to assist widows and orphans of families who had lost their primary bread winner. Life in the late 1800s was extremely harsh for Catholic immigrant families in the United States. During that time discrimination made it difficult for a Catholic man to get a good job. Catholics were regularly excluded from labor unions. Local charities and benefit organizations also frequently excluded Catholics. Catholics were also disenfranchised politically, as it was nearly impossible to get a Catholic elected to government office. Most Catholic men were forced to work in coal mines, sweat shops and ship yards, where they were subjected to harsh labor, poor working conditions, and less then minimum wage. As a result, many Catholic husbands and fathers lived short lives. The one organization well established in America, which could potentially help them, was Freemasonry. Unfortunately, Freemasonry had a strong religious/occult element that challenged the Catholic Church's claim of absolute truth revealed through the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Because of this, Freemasonry was soundly condemned by the Catholic Church. In addition to that, the Church also had significant political problems with Freemasonry in Europe.

These things prohibited Catholic men from joining the Freemasons under penalty of excommunication. In the late 1800s, this put many Catholic men in the terrible situation of having to choose between the Church and the welfare of their families. The Venerable Father McGivney sought to create a Catholic men's organization that would allow men to pool their resources, talents and energies for the common good and for the sake of their families, but he sought to do so without the religious/occult element that earned Freemasonry the scorn of the Catholic Church.

So the Knights of Columbus was formed under the ancient precepts of medieval chivalry, paralleling in some ways the degree programs used by the Freemasons, but without the unchristian oaths and occult rituals. The Vatican prohibition against Freemasonry remains today, and the reasons for this are fully explained by Catholic apologist John Salza (learn more here). According to the New Code of Canon Law (1983), this prohibition remains in effect under penalty of interdict.

The Venerable Father McGivney initially authored three degrees though which the Knights of Columbus would receive their initiation into the order.

Now if you looking to know the secrets of the degree rites, you won't find them here. 'The Catholic Knight' has taken a pledge not to reveal them on my honor. However, I should point out here that what I have taken is a pledge, not an oath, and there is a significant difference. A pledge is a promise. That is all. It is based on one's honor. Nothing is sworn, and there are no penalties if the pledge is broken. All that is lost is the honor of the man who broke the pledge, simple because he did not keep his promise. When I took my degree rites, I pledged not to tell what goes on there based entirely on my honor as a practicing Catholic man. No threats were made, and no penalties were warned. If I tell the secrets, nobody is going to slit my throat or cut my heart out. Nobody is going to kill me or harm me. Nobody is going to seek retribution against my family or business. I'll still be able to get a good job. I'll still be able to do business. I might even still be allowed to keep my membership in the Knights of Columbus. However, I will have lost my honor. I made a promise, and I would not have keep it. That prospect alone, is enough to keep me quiet. For I wish to be an honorable man. That's why you won't find the degree rite secrets here.

In addition to that, these pledges are made with the explicit exception to religious or civil duty. So for example, if my priest or bishop needed to know something about my knowledge of the degree rites, I could reveal that to them even if they were not members of the Knights of Columbus, without breaking my pledge. Furthermore, if an officer of the law, judge or courtroom attorney needed to know my knowledge of the degree rites, again, I could reveal that information without breaking my pledge. That's because these exceptions of civil and religious duty are explicitly written into the pledges. I could take it a step further, and some of my brother knights may take issue with this, but so be it. If my wife, whom I am sacramentally bound to in matrimony, for some reason needed to know my knowledge of the degree rites, again citing religious duty to honor this holy sacrament of matrimony, I could reveal that information without breaking my pledge.

When I took my pledges, I did not swear on anything. I did not call curses upon myself. I did not use the Lord's name in vain. I simply made a promise. That is a pledge. Unlike an oath, which frequently involves swearing, calling down curses upon one's self if the oath is broken, and often invokes the name of someone holy (like God for example) to bind one to the oath. Freemason's do take oaths, and that is very much a part of their degree rites. In contrast, Knights of Columbus do not take oaths. It is not part of our degree rites. And this is because the Scriptures are very clear...
"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." - Exodus 20:7

"Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." - Matthew 5:33-37

"But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation." - James 5:12
Now as for the degree rites themselves, this is what I can tell you without breaking my pledge...
  1. They are based on (1st degree) Charity, (2nd degree) Unity and (3rd degree) Fraternity. There is of course the optional 4th degree of Patriotism which was developed later. But these first three degree rites were crafted by The Venerable Father McGivney himself.
  2. Everything taught in these rites is 100% Biblical. There is no occult or "secret knowledge" conveyed in the Knights of Columbus. You could just as easily find the lessons of these degree rites in a Sunday homily or Scripture reading.
  3. Lessons are best remembered when emotion is attached to them. For example, when you get a good scare, you are far more likely to remember the lesson associated with it. A similar thing could be said for positive emotions as well, such as relief and joy.
  4. The degree rites are specifically designed to evoke emotion on the part of the candidate who is taking the rite.
  5. Because the degree rites are designed with the intent of evoking emotion, they MUST be kept secret, so as not to spoil the surprise for the candidate. The candidate must be unaware of what will happen, lest it spoil the intended emotional response, and the lesson of the degree rite be lost to mundane procedure, failing to leave an indelible mark on the candidates heart and mind.
  6. There is no ritual hazing in the Knights of Columbus, and nothing is ever done that would undermine the dignity of a Catholic man.
  7. Degree candidates are not ever asked to divulge deep dark secrets about themselves, nor say anything that would compromise their integrity, nor put themselves into a compromised position.
  8. Alcohol is never used, and is not permitted, during degree rites.
  9. Knights and candidates are exhorted to be good Catholic Christians, and to show no partiality between members and non-members. As Catholic Christians, knights do not look down upon non-members, nor are they permitted to consider themselves "better Catholics" simply because they are knights.
  10. Priests are permitted to audit and observe degree rites, nothing within the order is kept secret from the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. This is one reason why the Church has historically supported the Knights of Columbus and is currently considering the order's founder, The Venerable Father Michael McGivney, for canonization as a Saint.
  11. While the Knights of Columbus offers quality life insurance to it's members, at a reasonable price, no member is required to buy it. Nor is any member "pressured" to buy it. The insurance plans are simply offered as a benefit.
  12. Membership in the Knights of Columbus has many other benefits besides life insurance.
I'm afraid that's all you'll learn from me. Some might say I've already said too much. If so, I apologize, but I do not believe I have revealed any of the secrets of the order, nor do I believe I have violated my pledge to keep the elements of the degree rites secret. Personally, I have found my experience with the Knights of Columbus to be a rewarding one. Simultaneously, I have taken time away from the Knights of Columbus as well, so as to attend to family matters, in which my brother knights have always been very understanding and assured me that family comes first. They have also been quick to offer assistance whenever I was faced with personal and business difficulties.

If your a Catholic man who would like to learn more about the Knights of Columbus contact your local chapter. Personally, I would encourage getting involved in a knights council that is directly attached to a particular parish. This helps coordinate parish and knight activities in such a way that they become mutually beneficial.

False Witness - Roman Catholic Church

"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour."
- Exodus 20:16

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: The title of this entry may raise a few eyebrows, and I apologize for that. The purpose of this entry is to point out that SOME "Christians" (especially some of those of the Evangelical / Fundamentalist persuasion) are regularly in the habit of bearing false witness against their fellow Christians in the Catholic Church. This sin is generally one of ignorance, but sometimes it is accompanied by malicious intent. It's a very unchristian behavior pattern, and says allot about the immature and hypocritical nature of their spiritual development. YOU CAN'T BE A GOOD CHRISTIAN WHEN YOU'RE BEARING FALSE WITNESS AGAINST YOUR OWN CHRISTIAN NEIGHBORS!

Now to be sure, there are plenty of legitimate matters for Catholics and Protestants to disagree on, but all too often Catholics find themselves the victims of rumors and accusations that are simply not true at all. They are gross distortions of Catholic beliefs and practices. Those who spread these things are LIARS, and 'The Catholic Knight' hereby calls them out on it. That's right, I said LIARS - those who intentionally bear false witness. A good number of them have ulterior motives. Many of them are trying to sell books, magazines, or pamphlets. Some of them are trying to promote a "ministry" of some type, and are soliciting donations. Some of them make a living by GETTING PAID to visit churches and "educate" congregations about the supposed "evils" of Catholicism.

If you're an Evangelical, Pentecostal, Fundamentalist, Baptist or Nondenominational Christian who has bought a book, DVD, or has been given a seminar or sermon on the so-called "evils" of the "Roman Catholic Religious System," let me warn you that you have been had. You've been suckered! You've been hooked and reeled in to a "ministry" that is using you to make money at the expense of your fellow Christians, for the purpose of intentionally dividing the Body of Christ, so as to hinder it's witness in the modern world. Many of these so-called "ministries" are aligned with Freemasons and/or Secular Left Wing organizations. Some have even used known Communist propaganda as "important information" for their books and seminars. One good example of this is the so called "alliance" between the World War II Pope Pius XII and Adolph Hitler in an alleged Holocaust conspiracy. The former Soviet KGB has already admitted that this was pure propaganda and totally false. It was spread by the KGB throughout western Europe and the United States using willing accomplices among Secular Liberals in the media and college universities. It was designed to undermine the moral authority of the Catholic Church in the western world, with the intent on preparing western society for a Soviet takeover at some future date. Unfortunately for the Soviets, their empire collapsed in the early 1990s, and that "future date" never came. However, their propaganda, having already taken root in the western world, remained and flourished. This Soviet propaganda was gleefully picked up and spread by many Evangelical, Fundamentalist, Pentecostal, Baptist and Nondenominational churches. Likewise it was capitalized upon by those seeking to make money. To this very day one can easily find peddlers of this propaganda on the Internet, writing books and making the lecture rounds at Protestant churches all across America.

So are you tired of being suckered? Are you tired of giving your hard earned dollars to "ministries" that slander your fellow Christians and divide the Body of Christ?

Read on...

The Catholic Knight' weblog provides this information to you free of charge. I have nothing to gain from this. You will not spend a penny on anything you read here. My interest is in getting the truth out, and helping the Body of Christ heal from the scandalous propaganda that has contributed to the division of Christianity for the last 500 years.

In recent days you may have heard Internet rumors about the pope advocating a one-world government, or the Vatican attempting to force Sunday worship upon everybody. Maybe you've heard that Catholics worship Mary, or that they believe salvation comes through works. Perhaps you've heard that Catholics are into legalism, or that Catholics take secret oaths of some kind. Let me assure you that all of this is false. It's untrue, a complete fabrication, and those who promote this are money grubbing LIARS!

There are so many lies about the Catholic Church, that if one were to just believe a few of them, one would quickly discover that they frequently contradict each other. For example; some say Catholics worship Mary, but then they say Catholics worship the pope, then they say Catholics worship statues and saints. So which is it? The First Commandment (taught in every Catholic church) specifically says we may only worship one God. So if we worship Mary, how can we worship the pope, and if we worship the pope, how can we worship statues and saints. There can only be one God. Yet the Catholic Church specifically teaches that none of these things are gods at all, and none of them are to be worshiped. There is only one God, and that is the Lord Yahweh, who is Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I could go on and on about the many self-contradictions found in anti-Catholic propaganda, but I think it's more important to get at the truth.

Below is a list of links concerning Catholic beliefs and practices. Each one cites Biblical and historical reasons for why Catholics do this. What we have here is a catalog of the TRUTH. This is what Catholics actually believe and practice. No spin, no lies, and no propaganda. The information is provided by John Salza free of charge to all interested seekers of true and accurate information. Non-Catholics may still have issues they disagree with, and that's fine. But at least those areas of disagreement will be based on accurate information, not anti-Catholic propaganda....

Penn & Teller: Bullshit! - Circumcision

Circumcision is practiced since ancient times. Today this religious tradition is carried by Jews and Muslims. Also it is performing on new born babies especially in the US hospitals due to health advantages.

Anti-circumcision advocates think that it is a sex crime, and performing such a brutal operation on babies is against the human rights and there are lots of irreversible disadvantages.

Moreover it is claimed that that's a $400 million dollar industry.

To me, it is a total butchery!

I warn you! If you have the guts watch this episode. Because I fainted before the first 15 minutes. Broadcasted on April 25, 2005.

An Open Heart, a Worthy Offering

The Pope Opposes A One World Government

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: The mainstream media is at it again. It's an old game they've been playing for a long time. In it they twist the words of the pope, misinterpreting them, and taking them out of context. Then they throw their skewed stories out to the general population to cause a panic. People react to the news, thereby causing more news, so the mainstream media now has something more to report. Sadly people are not really reacting to what the pope said. They're just reacting to what the media said he said....
(LifeSiteNews.com) - Newspapers, blogs, talk-shows on radio and television are full of discussion over Pope Benedict XVI's supposed call for a "new world order" or a "one-world government." These ideas are, however, neither based in reality nor a clear reading of the Pope's latest encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, the release of which yesterday spawned the heated discussion.

The Pope actually speaks directly against a one-world government, and, as would be expected from those who have read his previous writings, calls for massive reform of the United Nations. Confusion seems to have come from paragraph 67 of the encyclical, which has some choice pull-quotes which have spiced the pages of the world's news, from the New York Times to those of conspiracy theorist bloggers seeing the Pope as the Anti-Christ.

The key quote which has led to the charge reads: "To manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result; to bring about integral and timely disarmament, food security and peace; to guarantee the protection of the environment and to regulate migration: for all this, there is urgent need of a true world political authority, as my predecessor Blessed John XXIII indicated some years ago."

However, in paragraph 41, the Holy Father specifically differentiates his concept of a world political authority from that of a one-world government. "We must," he says "promote a dispersed political authority." He explains that "The integrated economy of the present day does not make the role of States redundant, but rather it commits governments to greater collaboration with one another. Both wisdom and prudence suggest not being too precipitous in declaring the demise of the State. In terms of the resolution of the current crisis, the State's role seems destined to grow, as it regains many of its competences. In some nations, moreover, the construction or reconstruction of the State remains a key factor in their development."

Later in the encyclical (57) he speaks of the opposite concept to one- world government -subsidiarity (the principle of Catholic social teaching which states that matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest or least centralized competent authority) - as being essential. "In order not to produce a dangerous universal power of a tyrannical nature, the governance of globalization must be marked by subsidiarity," says the Pope....

So there you have it folks. The pope actually called for decentralized government -- the exact opposite of a one-world government -- consistent with the Catholic social principle of subsidiarity. To understand this however, one has to read the pope's encyclical in it's full context. What the media has done however - and I assert intentionally - is pull a quote completely out of context, and run it with their own subtitle, making it the exact opposite of what he said, thereby discrediting the pope among Catholics and causing panic among the general population (that panic being a source for more news of course). This kills two birds with one stone. They hurt the reputation of the pope, a favorite pass time among the press, and simultaneously created some more news for them to report, securing their paychecks for another week.

In my experience, this is a regular occurrence in the media's dealing with the pope. If you fell for it, then the media had you right where they wanted you. Better wise up, so they won't fool you next time. When hearing any news about the pope that seems odd or unusual, always try to verify it with the Vatican press office, or with an authentic Catholic news source.

Quantum Leaps in the Wrong Direction: Where Real Science Ends...and Pseudoscience Begins - Charles M. Wynn & Arthur W. Wiggins

"Here we have, in their book, a clearer look at the misconceptions and outright deceptions that plague us. Lots of sunlight, and a dash of disinfectant!" James Randi, aka The Amazing Randi

In this lightweight little book, Wynn, a professor of chemistry, and Wiggins, a professor of physics, follow up their Five Biggest Ideas in Science with what might be called The Five Biggest Ideas in Pseudoscience: UFOs and aliens, out-of-body experiences, astrology, creationism, and ESP. Into this mix they throw every suspect (usually money-making) pseudoscience they can think of. Their inclusion of graphology might be questioned, since it has long held a higher reputation in Europe than in the U.S., and the matter of Holocaust deniers is better dealt with elsewhere. The chapter on creationism is unlikely to change the opinions of many believers, and an ill-considered section on life after death may cause some readers to set the book aside. Angels fear to tread into discussions of the immortality of the soul, and these authors should have too. Wynn and Wiggins apparently were aiming for a serious discussion leavened with humor, but their approach seems incoherent. Sidney Harris, well known for his work in the New Yorker, has contributed cartoons, but they are rather hit-and-miss and just add to the uneven tone of the book. The authors make some interesting points (Noah's ark, if built to the dimensions given in the Bible, wouldn't have been seaworthy), but it's doubtful that readers who believe in astrology, ESP or UFOs will pick this book up to begin with, let alone be convinced by the authors' arguments. Forecast: It won't be long before this title takes a quantum leap into the remainder bins. Publishers Weekly

Obama Vows To Reduce Abortions

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: Yeah right! I'll believe it when I see it. Alleged President Barack Obama's short political career was built on Roe v. Wade. He owes his very soul to Planned Parenthood and N.O.W. Yet the Vatican is reporting that Obama did make this PROMISE to the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI. So now the only questions that beg to be asked is did he mean it? Or did he lie to the pope? And just how does he plan to do it if he did mean it?

Of course he could start with something as simple as "states rights" by simply asking Congress to remove the jurisdiction on abortion cases away from the federal courts. It's a simple legislative process that only requires a majority vote and no changes to the Constitution or judicial appointments. This effectively neutralizes Roe v. Wade in a de facto way, allowing states to legislate anyway they want on abortion and blocking Planned Parenthood and N.O.W. from doing anything to stop it. Roe v. Wade stands on the books, but it becomes unenforceable. Oh wait! That will never happen. Mainly because it requires the cooperation of a supposedly "pro-choice" Democratic Congress, and not even the supposedly "pro-life" Republicans had the guts to do that when they were in control. Why on earth would we expect the Democrats to do it? I suppose the fact that Obama owes his very soul to Planned Parenthood and N.O.W. probably doesn't help much either. So I guess that's out.

What next? More condoms and birth control pills for teenagers in public schools? Yeah, we've seen how well that works. How about more sex education? Oh wait, we've done that. No change. It's really going to be interesting to see how Obama plans to keep this PROMISE he made to the pope. Or does he even take his promise to the pope seriously at all?

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama promised Pope Benedict on Friday that he would do everything possible to reduce the number of abortions in the United States, the Vatican said.

Obama and Benedict held private talks for about 40 minutes in the pope's frescoed study in the Vatican's apostolic palace and the Vatican said bioethics and life issues were a central part of the discussion.

In a surprise move, the pontiff gave Obama a booklet explaining Vatican opposition to practices such as abortion and embryonic stem cell research, which Obama supports.

"Obama told the pope of his commitment to reduce the number of abortions and of his attention and respect for the positions of the Catholic Church," Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told reporters after he was briefed by the pope.

ALERT! - Talk To Your Priest, Get Organized Now, Create Social Network Through Your Church, Time Is Short!

(Politico) - If you thought last week’s job numbers were bad, take a look at the latest from Morgan Stanley’s chief economist, Richard Berner.

In a research note that’s been making the rounds of economics blogs this week, Berner declares that “America’s long-awaited fiscal train wreck is now under way.”

By “train wreck,” he means out-of-control federal budget deficits that he’s sure will finally drag the economy under — as if we weren’t already feeling badly enough about its shaky state.

“Depending on policy actions taken now and over the next few years, federal deficits will likely average as much as 6 percent of [the gross domestic product] through 2019, contributing to a jump in debt held by the public to as high as 82 percent of GDP
by then — a doubling over the next decade,” Berner writes on Morgan Stanley’s online Global Economic Forum....

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: The American economy is about to tank. The stock market will soon crash. Unemployment will sore through the roof. Soon after the value of the dollar will suffer hyperinflation as the reserve raises interests rates in an attempt to slow it's decline. The party is over. America is going into a Great Depression. It's time to get prepared. Set up networks within your parish church. We need to support each other to get through this. No man is an island. DONE - Ecclesia Dei Now Part of CDF

(CNS) - Pope Benedict XVI has placed the commission responsible for relations with traditionalist Catholics under the authority of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith as he announced four months ago he intended to do.

In a brief note published this morning, Pope Benedict accepted the resignation of 80-year-old Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos as president of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei,” which since 1988 has been charged with outreach to the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X as well as with assisting Catholics attached to the pre-Vatican II liturgy.

As president of the commission, the pope named U.S. Cardinal William J. Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The pope also named Italian Msgr. Guido Pozzo, assistant secretary of the International Theological Commission and a staff member of the doctrinal congregation, to serve as secretary of “Ecclesia Dei.”

The Vatican also released today the formal papal document reorganizing the office....

Obama Meets The Pope

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: So I'm not particularly thrilled with Obama's visit to the Holy Father in what is sure to turn into the biggest photo-op of his still very short political career. Oh well, maybe the pope can perform an exorcism on him while he's there.

Everyone Hates Celibacy!

By Rev. Fr. Robert Barronhttp://wordonfire.org/A few weeks ago, in the wake of the Fr. Alberto Cutie scandal, an editor at CNN.com asked me to write a short piece (800 words) on the meaning of celibacy from a Catholic standpoint. So I composed what I thought was a harmless little essay, laying out as simply and straightforwardly as I could why the Church reverences celibacy as a spiritual path.

Should Christians Boycott Churches That Don't Provide Schools?

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: A friend of mine recently brought up a thought provoking question. The area in which we live is marked by a handful of prominent mega-churches of various denominations. Not a single one of these mega-churches provides a Christian school or a subsidized homeschool program. To send your kids to a Christian school in this area, you have to go to a smaller church. Even then there aren't very many that provide schools. There are a few Catholic schools, one Lutheran school, one Baptist school, along with a few Evangelical schools and homeschool cooperatives. That's it. When you consider this immediate area has over 600 churches, that's a pretty amazingly low number of Christian schools.

So that being said, what is the purpose of a church? Whether you're Catholic or Protestant, Reformed or Evangelical, the answer is the same. The primary role of the Church is to preach the gospel, and provide for the spiritual needs of Christians. Of course the primary spiritual need of all Christian families is a Christian education for children. That being the case, why are so few churches actively involved in education? And what does that say about those churches that fail to provide education programs for children? Certainly the argument could be made that very small churches might not be able to provide education programs for children. That's understandable. However, there is still no reason why such small churches can't team up with other small churches and pool their resources in some way to provide this essential need.

I recently spoke with a retired public school teacher, and devout Protestant Christian, about this problem. I specifically asked her why she thought this problem existed. She laughed a bit, and said that question was an easy one for anyone old enough to remember. Here's what she told me. The reason why so many non-Catholic churches don't provide schools is because up until a few decades ago, they didn't have to. That's because prior to 1963, nondenominational Protestant Christianity was openly taught in the public schools. Prayers were recited before classes each day, the Protestant Bible (usually the King James Version) was openly read as part of the curriculum, and schools regularly organized one-hour weekly field trips (usually on a Friday) to a nearby Protestant church for nondenominational worship services (with parental permission of course). So for the majority of the 20th century, the government provided education for Protestant churches. As this retired school teacher put it, "they just got lazy." It's been nearly five decades since those days, and a lot has changed. Public schools no longer provide Christian education for children, but sadly, neither do most Protestant churches. In the course of half a century, our government education has radically changed the way it does business, but the nation's Protestant churches have not. Maybe it's time to adapt.

Catholic churches have a better track record with religious schools, but mainly because they were forced to provide their own for so long (over a century). Still there are many rural places throughout the United States where Catholic schools are not available to local Catholics, even if a town parish is provided. In this case, something in the way of parish subsidized home education ought to at least be explored.

When churches fail to provide such a fundamental spiritual need as childhood education, it really speaks a lot about their priorities. So my friend's question is simply this. Regardless of denomination, or even if they have kids, should Christians boycott churches that do not in some way try to meet the education needs of children, and go to church somewhere else instead?
